Dear Sir/Madam

Re: Recent decision to deny entry to unpartnered students

Many Manawatu Schools do not demand that students  take a female partner to the ball, despite the controversial rule ‘no date -no entry’ taken by you: Palmerston North's biggest high school.

All balls are a celebration and a special occasion. The students look forward to this, often right from the beginning of high school. These occasions only happen once a year, and only in Year 12 and 13. Why is it so wrong that if you do not have a date, i.e. female date, you are not eligible to go?

Furthermore, these are formal occasions. Formality is not decided by whether or not you have a partner. It can still be formal, because they have to wear suits or tuxedos, which straight away promotes something more than just a standard party. They often go in flash cars and go together as groups. We are dating back to the 1950’s with this type of archaic thinking that you have demonstrated.

These events are not gender based surely! In the world today, we now have single sex marriages and we acknowledge that not everyone will have a girlfriend at 16 or 17. Why would you discriminate against these poor boys who have unfortunately not got a date? They may have tried but found it difficult so decided to leave finding a female partner at this point in their lives. Why would you make them feel bad about this and possibly themselves?

In conclusion, I think you should take this, as I stated earlier, archaic rule away. Today’s world is littered with suicide attempts because young people do not feel accepted. Are you not promoting this?  I think you should think very carefully about the repercussions of your actions.

Yours sincerely

Alice Robinson
